Morning walk through the Wynwood Art District – Miami

One of the most instagrammable attractions of Miami, the artistic neighborhood of Wynwood will steal your heart with its colorful murals. Since the late 1990s, this former industrial district was brought back to life, redeveloped and turned into the most vibrant and creative area of the city. The once abandoned warehouses and factories became art studios, galleries, and restaurants. Artists moved in and Wynwood was converted into the center of fashion, design, art, innovation, and creativity. Today, the Wynwood Art District is a remarkably unique location in Miami, one that you can’t leave out of your itinerary if you’re in town.

Visit the Wynwood Walls!

I love street art. Having heard of Wynwood’s colorful graffiti and murals, how could I not stop by and take a look at this bright neighboorhood myself? So last Saturday morning, with the sun shining high in the sky, I hopped into an Uber and headed downtown for the first time. I was dropped off at the famous Wynwood Walls and started my visit from there.

Conceived by urban developer Tony Goldman in 2009 as an attempt to revitalize the area and promote the often under-appreciated genre of graffiti and street art, this outdoor murals exhibition has become the very heart of the district. Over 50 artists representing about 16 countries have contributed to the Wynwood Walls project. How cool is that? And what’s even cooler is that visitors can enjoy these beautiful artworks for FREE!

Murals and graffiti can be found all over the neighborhood, not just at the Wynwood Walls. Everywhere you look, you can find amazing paintings covering entire buildings, and creating suggestive scenes in any corner of the district. Looking around, it almost feels like you have entered an imaginary world of colors, shapes, and illusions. My advice? Set your imagination free while admiring these masterpieces! I definitely did so and it was a very refreshing feeling!

A couple of suggestions to enjoy the Wynwood Art District to the fullest!

  • Morning is the best time to head to Wynwood. It’s not too crowded and it’s the part of the day when the light is perfect to take good pictures! (I would definitely avoid noon. Besides being very hot, the harsh midday light will affect the colors of the graffiti in your photos)
  • Take your time to walk around the neighborhood looking for your favorite mural! Wynwood definitely deserves more than a brief stop at the Wynwood Walls. Plan to spend at least a couple of hours there.
  • If you want to know more about Wynwood, why not take a tour? Check out the ones recommended by the district here. I haven’t tried any yet, but I’m definitely planning on doing it soon enough.
  • After a pleasant and refreshing walk around the colorful streets of the neighborhood, take a moment to appreciate the art surrounding you at one of the picturesque and stylish cafes and bars in the area.
  • Make your visit memorable by taking loads of pics for the gram!

I’m planning to go back there and do some more exploration soon. I’ll keep you posted!
